The story behind the Submariner

Rolex had been building waterproof watches since the Oyster of 1926, so a purpose-built dive watch was a natural next step. The Submariner arrived in 1953 as underwater exploration was gaining popularity, and Rolex presented it to the public at Basel in 1954 as a watch waterproof to 100 metres. With its rotating bezel, high-contrast dial and robust Oyster case, it became the template for the modern dive watch, a design that has stayed recognisable for more than 70 years, from early references like the 6204 and 5513 to today's ceramic-bezel Submariner, which adopted Cerachrom in 2010.
