The story behind the Explorer 1016
The Explorer name goes back to 1953, the year of the first ascent of Everest, after Rolex had backed Himalayan expeditions for two decades. The ref. 1016 arrived in the early 1960s and stayed in production until 1989, the longest run of any Explorer reference. It kept the 36mm Oyster case and the 3-6-9 dial that defines the model. Early examples have glossy gilt dials, which later gave way to matte, and the original calibre 1560 was later replaced by the 1570.
