The story behind the details
The crown has been Rolex's emblem since the 1920s. It earned its place in watchmaking history in 1926, when the Oyster introduced the screw-down crown and made the first truly waterproof wristwatch case. A year later, Mercedes Gleitze swam the English Channel wearing an Oyster, proving the idea to the public. The fluted bezel began as a practical detail, as the grooves gave grip for screwing the bezel down tightly onto the case and helping seal it against water. It went on to define the Datejust, launched in 1945, and is now one of the most recognisable shapes in watchmaking.
